Dada Birthplace Struggles Amid Funding Woes

The Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, a birthplace of the Dada movement founded in 1916, is seeking $13.1 million to acquire its building and stave off funding concerns. The cabaret was previously threatened with demolition in 2002, when artists occupied the space to prevent an imminent condo conversion. That move was successful, but municipal funding secured thereafter has since been withdrawn after a right-wing referendum; a substantial sponsorship from Swatch was also withdrawn. The Cabaret Voltaire is now seeking the $13.1 million to purchase the building from its landlord, the Swiss Life insurance company.
